Hair tips to see you through the big day
Christmas comes but once a year, and somehow between herding over excited children, getting the turkey in the oven and topping up a sea of empty glasses you need to look fabulous in thousands of obligatory family photos.
But don’t worry, we’re here to help with our top tips to keep your hair looking perfect through the day and into the night, so you have one less thing to worry about this year.
It all starts on Christmas Eve
Once you’ve busied the children and laid out Santa’s mince pie, it’s time to turn attention to you. Tomorrow will be constant Christmas cheer, starting with the little ones up before dawn, and the chance of grabbing 20 minutes to create the perfect hairstyle is unlikely.
Volume and shine
If your hair is prone to fall flat take action by applying a little mousse to the roots after towel drying. If your hair is dry and damaged, a little serum at the ends will reduce appearance of splits and boost shine.
Blowdry
The number one rule for a perfect blowdry is to make sure hair is bone dry before you finish. Any residual moisture will just revert hair to the flat or frizzy state you’ve worked so hard to avoid. For best results blowdry your hair upside down using a diffuser – this makes the most of the natural body of your hair.
Prepare the hair
Spritz your hair all over, and underneath, with a lightweight setting spray or silicone based hairspray. Don’t be tempted to skip this step as although your hair may be lovely and silky to touch now, any style you put in it will be long gone by morning.
Style
The hottest look this season is for glamorous tumbling waves; flattering, sophisticated and forgiving on any colour.
Start by sectioning you hair with big clips. For the best finish use ceramic or tourmaline curling tongs (which minimise damage and give a more consistent heat) to curl the entire length of the hair away from the face.
When you’ve finished either run your fingers through the curls to break them up slightly or turn upside down and give hair a good shake for smaller curls and fuller volume. Give hair a final spritz of setting spray or hairspray and scrunch curls with your hands.
Time for bed
Before you go to sleep pull up hair into big loose swirls and secure with bobby pins. Then pop on a hair net before turning out the light.
The Big Day
Christmas morning starts early. Whip off the hair net and tease out the pins letting curls fall naturally, you can give it a final spray and very soft sweep with a natural bristle brush to give high shine. If at any point in the day you feel curls are falling, flip upside down, spritz and scrunch gently. Now you can get on with the more important things, like presents!
Merry Christmas.
